Build your Brand!

In many ways individuals are not much different than companies. Successful companies both big and small work hard daily to build their brand, name and reputation. Why? Because having a trusted and respected brand provides them with big advantages over their competition.

A strong personal brand can do the same for you!

So what is a personal brand - it is your character, it is what you do, what you are known for. Everyone has a personal brand, if developed and used correctly it can be the greatest asset you have. Just ask any successful politician, sportsman or entertainer.

Like the successful companies what we think, say and do every day is what builds our brand. If you want a strong personal brand or good reputation make sure you are always thinking, speaking and acting smart. That's right smart not dumb or stupid. People don't like to associate themselves with stupid people.

Here are some clues on how to build an outstanding brand and reputation.

1. When someone asks you a question, make sure they get an answer of real quality. If you don’t know the answer don't speak glib useless rubbish - makes you look silly. Be honest and say you don’t know but you will find out the answer for them and then do so.

2. When your boss, coach or teacher asks you to do something, don’t whinge and moan, just get on with it and deliver a result at a level much greater than they would have expected.

3. Take no shortcuts. Shortcuts in business and life are often associated with cheating and dishonesty. Cheating is a bad brand. No shortcuts – instead stun people with your willingness to go the extra mile!

4. Here is the biggy! When you say you will do something make sure you do it when you said you would and the way you said you would.

Fletch's Big Tip: If you develop a reputation for delivering as promised you will build a trusted and respected brand. More people will seek you out; you will attract more opportunities. You will make more money. Additionally people will become loyal to you and will forgive you if you occasionally stuff up!
